When Michelangelo finally completed the sculpture of David, everyone was in awe of what he had accomplished. The block of marble he had been working on had been condemned for its supposed "bad quality" and abandoned to exposure to sun and rain in the courtyard of the Duomo Cathedral in Florence. Two other artists had tried to work on it and failed, but Michelangelo had a vision. 

The young artist saw David in the block of marble and worked to set him free. After his work was finished, he supposedly said that all he did was remove that was not David from the massive block of marble.
